I’m Luke Robinson, a master thatcher based in Somerset, working across Devon, Dorset, and Beyond. With over 15 years of experience, I specialise in traditional thatching using water reed and wheat straw. I work on residential cottages, listed heritage properties, and new build homes.
My interest in thatching began with a simple admiration for the beauty of traditional roofs. I have always enjoyed working with my hands and being outdoors, and it quickly became clear that a practical craft suited me the best.
I chose to pursue thatching properly and completed a four-year apprenticeship in Devon, learning the trade in a hands on, traditional way.
After my apprenticeship I worked a few years as a self-employed thatcher and then I spent several years working abroad, gaining experience across different areas of construction including timber framing, concrete work, and landscaping.
During my journeyman time I also met my wife and we lived in her home country Austria for a few years, where I worked in metal roofing, before we eventually returned to England.
While these years gave me a broader understanding of building as a whole, they also confirmed that thatching is where my real passion lies.
Returning to the South West allowed me to pick up where I left off, building on my earlier experience and reconnecting with trusted suppliers and local knowledge of thatching styles in the region.
Over the years, I’ve completed a wide range of projects in both water reed and wheat straw thatching. This includes full and partial roof replacements, ridge work, roof repairs, flush and decorative ridges, and porch re-thatching.
I now live in Somerset, where I am originally from, with my wife who supports the business from behind the scenes.
I carry full public liability for peace of mind.
