With over <strong>15 years of experience<\/strong>, I specialise in <strong>traditional thatching <\/strong>using water reed and wheat straw. I work on <strong>residential cottages<\/strong>, <strong>listed heritage properties<\/strong>, and <strong>new build homes<\/strong>.<br><br>My interest in thatching began with a simple <strong>admiration for the beauty of traditional roofs<\/strong>. I have always enjoyed <strong>working with my hands<\/strong> and <strong>being outdoors<\/strong>, and it quickly became clear that a <strong>practical craft<\/strong> suited me the best.<br><br>I chose to pursue thatching properly and completed a <strong>four-year apprenticeship <\/strong>in Devon, learning the trade in a hands on, traditional way.<br><br>After my apprenticeship I worked a few years as a <strong>self-employed thatcher<\/strong> and then I spent several years <strong>working abroad<\/strong>, gaining <strong>experience across different areas of constructio<\/strong>n including<strong> timber framing<\/strong>, <strong>concrete work<\/strong>, and <strong>landscaping<\/strong>.<br><br>During my journeyman time I also met my wife and we lived in her home country <strong>Austria <\/strong>for a few years, where I worked in <strong>metal roofing<\/strong>, before we eventually returned to England.<br><br>While these years gave me a broader understanding of building as a whole, they also confirmed that thatching is where my <strong>real passion<\/strong> lies.<br><br>Returning to the <strong>South West<\/strong> allowed me to pick up where I left off, building on my earlier experience and reconnecting with <strong>trusted suppliers<\/strong> and <strong>local knowledge<\/strong> of thatching styles in the region.<br><br>Over the years, I&#8217;ve completed a <strong>wide range of projects<\/strong> in both water reed and wheat straw thatching.
